Have you ever seen MONTECRISTO magazine? It's a lifestyle quarterly focused mostly on Vancouver stories, "designed for the discerning, cultured Vancouverite".
I recently went for coffee with Craig Long, the assistant editor of MONTECRISTO, and he guided me on an enlightening trip through the pages of the issue that's just hitting newsstands right now. It was cool to get insight on the stories in the issue as well as the ideas behind the publication itself, which I'm looking forward to checking out every 3 months from now on... even though I've never been to the Vancouver Opera. It's cultured but it's not inaccessible, the stories within it's pages are super interesting and relevant to anybody who lives and loves in this city of ours. Good stuff.
Craig was kind enough to also put together these brief summaries of a few of the Vancouver-centric pieces from this issue, so you know what to look forward to...
- We have an interview with the master barber that Momentum Grooming enlisted as a consultant when they opened up their Barber Suite earlier this year.
Team 1040 radio host, Scott Rintoul, wrote a piece for us about the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team, and how their program has become increasingly sought-after by aspiring ball players across the continent. Of course, that is credible to head coach Terry McKaig and his protégé, Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis.
- We also have a profile of Jake Kerr. Mr. Kerr cut his teeth in the lumber industry, but since retiring, has been busier than ever. He is the co-owner of Nat Bailey stadium and the Vancouver Canadians baseball team, the chair of the Vancouver Foundation, and the first-ever Chancellor of Emily Carr University.
For foods, we have a culinary tour of Chinatown, a taste of regional brie cheeses, and a discussion about the taboo around daytime cocktails (written by bartender extraordinaire, Jay Jones)
- Michele Kambolis shares her story with us, about how her experiences as a clinical child therapist are what led her to become one of Vancouver’s most promising visual artists.
- The Vancouver Opera is now entering its fiftieth year. We sat down with general director, James Wright, to talk to him about how the Opera has succeed here in Vancouver, and about some of his goals for the Opera as it enters its next 50 years.
- We also have an interview with local artist Brandon Thiessen, who as well as pushing the boundary of conceptual photography with trompe-l’oeil art installations, runs a side-business of crating and shipping art works for galleries and museums.
- We caught up with the Hotel Manager at the Shangri-La, Hani El-Sharkawi, and asked him about what it takes to open and maintain a hotel of such high calibre.
- Plus, we spoke with the award-wining North Vancouver-based architecture firm, McFarlane Green Biggar, and they told us about some of the very impressive international projects currently on the go.
