Centre A in partnership with YAYOI THEATRE MOVEMENT SOCIETY presents Identity- Ancestral Memory: Inspired by the life & art of Roy Kiyooka. This is an opportunity to experience performance art on Friday Apr 23 or Saturday Apr 24 at 8pm. Admission is free.

Identity - Ancestral Memory explores the impact of ancestral memory by looking at the life of Japanese-Canadian artist, Roy Kiyooka.

A multi-media production combining dance, music and video, it depicts the struggle of the artist grappling with dual Japanese and Canadian identities, against the backdrop of racism in wartime Vancouver.


Or Gallery presents Friend or Foe by Rebecca Belmore and Terrance Houle. Opening Reception: Friday, Apr 23, 8pm.

Friend or Foe boldly questions how the Aboriginal body may be utilized to create and dismantle First Nations stereotypes. Belmore and Houle, each in their own way, utilize their own body and the performance medium to delve into and explore colonialism and the social affects of racial stereotyping.


Another exciting event if you are looking for something cool and art related to do this weekend is the Heritage Vancouver Long Table Social. It will be an evening of eclectic art performances in a newly restored heritage building in downtown Vancouver.

Two great artist will join us for the night to speak about their work.

Brendan Lee Satish Tang creates sculptures which are extreme contradictions between Chinese porcelain and French ormolu traditions with modern Japanese Manga forms.

And Germaine Koh is a conceptual artist who’s work is to quote Germaine is ‘an attempt to be attentive to the poetics of daily life by focusing on those phenomena that shape everyday experience’.
