The Proof - Anthony Smith

Anthony Smith is a bit shy about praising all the things that make Vancouver Awesome. He’s only been here 5 years. With a passion for both bikes and photography it seems fitting that he ended up in Vancouver pursuing an arts degree at Emily Carr.

Anthony Smith is a bit shy about praising all the things that make Vancouver Awesome.  He’s only been here 5 years.  With a passion for both bikes and photography it seems fitting that he ended up in Vancouver pursuing an arts degree at Emily Carr. The North Shore’s legendary mountain bike trails combined with the cities vibrant arts scene made Vancouver a perfect match. These days, bikes, coffee, photography, and his dog Ruby are just a few of Anthony’s daily priorities.  There’s no doubt now, that Vancouver is home.

The Proof

1. Riding up Mt. Fromme, on a cold, and wet afternoon in January.

2. Jericho beach in the summer is one of my favorite spots

3. My dog Ruby chewing on a stick at Kits dog beach.

4. Side street in North Van where the sheriff lives.

5. Foggy day on the North Shore.

6. The top shelf in my fridge is usually reserved for film.  My last few packs of Polaroid are near the back of this photo.

7. All my wet gear after a ride in the pouring rain.

8. Brohm Lake, on the Sea to Sky Corridor, is amazing.  This is my friend Eli jumping in after a day riding in the Whistler bike park.

The Questions

What neighborhood do you live in?

When I moved here I got off the plane, and took the 98 B-Line from the airport to Broadway and Granville.  Five years later I’m still in the neighborhood.  I dig it.  It’s close to the beach, just across the bridge from downtown, and there’s a Dog Park just down the block.

What do you do and where?

I moved to Vancouver so I could finish my BFA in photography at Emily Carr.  Since graduating in 08 I’ve taken on all sorts of projects. Painting projects, editorial jobs, and photo gigs.  It always seems like I have something on the go that’s challenging me to think unconventionally.  It’s a good feeling.  Like most recent grads however I have a semi regular 9-5.  For me (and my dog Ruby) that means working at Kitsilano bike shop, Dizzy Cycles.

What are you working on?

In the fall I spent 5 weeks in Japan working on a new photo project.  I travelled the country, shot tons of photos, and inadvertently offended most people I met with my Japanese style tattoos.  Apparently tattoos are not that popular in Japan.  Strait from Tokyo I went up to Whistler to spend a month working with Bike Magazine on their inaugural gear guide.  I’ve contributed bike and product reviews to them over the past few years, and was lucky enough to be invited up to Whistler as part of their test crew.  The issue just hit newsstands, and I’m really proud of what the team put together. Recently I‘ve been contributing editorial content to levelmag.com, uploading lots of new content to my personal site, and getting prepared for a trip to South America in late February.  Life is good.
