Andrew Morrison is the editor of local food and culture website Scout; the weekly restaurant critic at the Westender newspaper; a food writer for Vancouver, Harry, Western Living, and Conde Nast Traveler magazines; the editor of the Vancouver Cooks cookbook; and the National Referee at the annual Canadian Culinary Championships. He lives and works in Strathcona and is currently enjoying his 26th year in a row on a skateboard.

1. The owners of the hotly anticipated Sea Monstr Sushi in Gastown (due this September) have picked up Dan & Guu veteran Keith Allison to be their executive chef (don't let the Anglo name fool you - he's Japanese). What does the acquisition mean? Really good sushi.

2. Strathcona's cheese-driven Au Petit Chavignol has teamed up with local brewery Red Truck to host a five course, totally beer-soaked tasting menu for suds and cheese-lovers on May 11th. $60 gets you dinner, beer, tip, and taxes. Call 604-255-4218 to reserve.

3. The immensely popular Dine Out Vancouver program from Tourism Vancouver comes to a close tonight. What's awesome about that? While restaurants count their winnings, things for us diners return to relative normal. No more line ups. No more trouble making a reservation.

4. Poutine pizza with shaved fingerling potatoes and bordelaise sauce? Yup, and you can find it at Charlie's (1265 Hamilton) in Yaletown. It might sound (and look) like the worst gastronomic disaster since Chef Boyardee, but I had it the other night and it's borderline fabulous (see photo above).

5. Exotic wiener lovers rejoice! The retail location of Japadog is on the very verge of opening at 536 Robson. Tick tock.
