In the Playground for August 4-10: dinosaurs, TrainFest, neighbourhood parties, Art in the Garden, street hockey, bubbles and more. Here are some fun things to do with the kids this week:

Coming soon alert! Walking with Dinosaurs Live will be in Vancouver at the end of this month. Last week a baby t-rex from Walking with Dinosaurs visited Telus World of Science. This is what it looked like:

How cool is that? Now picture fifteen of those big guys taking over Rogers Arena -- and keep in mind that was the BABY t-rex. Tickets for the August 26-29 shows are on sale now. Click HERE for details.

Wednesday, August 4

Bobs and Lolo are performing at the West Vancouver Community Centre from 10-11:30. This is a free event and part of the Harmony Arts Festival, which I mentioned in last week’s Playground. There are a bunch of other great festival shows this week. Take a look at the children’s programs HERE.

Movies for Mommies is showing Letters to Juliet, 12:30 at the Rio Theatre.

Friday, August 6

Join South Vancouver Family Place in celebrating their 33rd anniversary with a family picnic. Story time, live performances, parachute games, bubble machines and plenty more fun, 10am-2pm at Bobolink Park, Nanaimo & 61st.

Saturday, August 7

The UBC Botanical Garden is hosting Art in the Garden this weekend -- an exhibition of the works of over 25 BC artists. 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. And don't forget to check out the Greenheart Canopy Walkway while you're there!

Saturday is TrainFest at Burnaby Central Railway in Confederation Park. Lots of different trains to see and ride, 11am-5pm.

The Young Naturalists’ Club of Stanley Park meets Saturday from 10am-12pm. For kids age 5-14 with an adult, nature exploration and hands-on fun! Find out more HERE.

Kitsilano Community Centre is hosting Picnic in the Park. Carnival rides and games, BBQ, arts and crafts, entertainment and lots more, 12-4pm at Connaught Park.

The West End Cultural Celebration is also Saturday, hosted by Gordon Neighbourhood House. BBQ, children's carnival, art and crafts, music and entertainment, 11am-3pm.

Celebration Métis is a free family event featuring food, music, crafts, children’s activities and historical displays. On the North Lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery, 12-5pm.

Sunday, August 8

Game On! The 1st Annual Chinatown Youth Street Hockey Tournament is this Sunday. The 500 block of Carrall Street will be closed to traffic from 12-6pm, so come on down and cheer on your favourite local youth organization.

BUBBLE BASH! Bring your bubbles and wands to the Vancouver Art Gallery from 3-4pm and help create some downtown magic. Love this idea. Details HERE.

Artful Sundays begin in Napier Square (Napier St @ Commercial Drive) this week and run for the next five weeks. Local artists, live music, artist's workshops and demonstrations, from 12-5pm. More info HERE.

Dancing in the Street! Drop in to a free 30 minute swing dance lesson on Granville Street between Georgia and Robson, courtesy of Jungle Swing Productions. Lesson is at 1pm and dancing continues until 4.

Roundhouse Community Picnic and Outdoor Movie Night in Yaletown:

Don’t miss the third annual Outdoor Movie Night in Yaletown on the 40’ x 20’ BIG screen featuring a classic film from the 80’s for everyone to enjoy. The movie is always Top Secret...but “McFly” always knows! Bring your own blanket or folding chair, and your own flashlight.

The picnic’s from noon to four and the movie starts at dusk. At David Lam Park on the waterfront.
