Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver parents and their awesome kids. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me at theplayground@vancouverisawesome.com. Because Vancouver is awesome for kids too!

In the Playground for the week of September 15-21: Artemis Rocks, Bollywood Jazz, BodyWorlds, Earthdance, Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and more.

But first, did you make it to Yo Gabba Gabba Live last weekend? We did and I had at least as much fun as Cassandra. Loved musical guests The Salteens and Dancey Dance time with Craig Northey of The Odds, and of course, watching all the kids give good beats with Biz Markie. In fact, I was so excited I forgot my camera. So instead of subjecting you to the photos I took on my phone, I pulled this one from the Yo Gabba Gabba Live! website:

That's DJ Lance and the Gabba gang at BC Children's Hospital on Saturday. Just one more reason to love them.

Now, here are some fun things to do with the kids this week:

Artemis Fowl is coming to the Vancouver Public Library on September 23rd:

Join best-selling author Eoin Colfer with special guest Artemis Fowl, the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history, on September 23 for a night you won't soon forget.

Celebrating the launch of The Atlantis Complex, Colfer's seventh book in his hilariously funny Artemis Fowl adventure series, the Artemis Rocks! Show is an amazing live action show like none other!

Tickets are free, but you can only get them by entering the VPL’s pre-show lottery HERE. The contest ends at noon today, so go there NOW! Good luck, everyone!

Wednesday, September 15

Movies for Mommies is showing Eat Pray Love, 12:30 at the Rio Theatre.

Kidsbooks is hosting the launch of Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom, which may well be the best children’s book title ever. (You might remember Rachel's recent post about the awesome window display for the book.) You can learn more about the book HERE, and more about the launch HERE.

Thursday, September 16

Discover Bollywood Jazz at The Dance Centre as the Discover Dance! noon hour series begins another great season. The monthly shows are suitable for all ages, combining performance with artist talkbacks and sometimes audience participation. This Thursday, watch the Vancouver Bollywood Jazz team perform a dynamic fusion of Western jazz and hip hop with Indian dance techniques. For more information and tickets, click HERE.

BODY WORLDS is coming back to Science World and this time, it's all about the brain:

BODY WORLDS & The Brain features over 200 authentic human specimens, including whole-body plastinates, organs and translucent body slices. The exhibition also highlights recent neuroscience findings on brain development, function and disease. This is a one-of-a-kind anatomy and physiology lesson and your chance to see firsthand how lifestyle choices impact your health.

This is an all-new exhibit so if you saw the 2006 show, there's still plenty in BODY WORLDS & The Brain to interest you. For details click HERE.

Saturday, September 18

Earthdance 2010 is this Saturday at Prospect Point in Stanley Park. Yoga, meditation, art, dance, hula hooping, a bicycle parade and a multicultural potluck. And there's a kids zone too! Get more info on Earthdance HERE.

The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition is offering a new Family Bike Skills Course. If you'd like to feel more comfortable cycling on city streets with your children, this course is ideal for you. Information and registration are available HERE.

There's a Mid-Autumn Moon Celebration at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden:

Traditionally, farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this day while Chinese families and friends gather to celebrate and admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon and eat moon cakes together. The Garden will be open from 10-4 by donation for everyone to come and celebrate this special holiday. We will have a number of activities, games and traditional decorations...perfect for the whole family!

For more information on the gardens and Sunday's celebration, click HERE.

Head to the North Shore for the Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, a community street party complete with pancakes, clowns, juggling, live music, dance demos and an apple pie contest. Get more info HERE.

And finally, another upcoming event: The Wiggles Wiggly Circus is coming to the Pacific Coliseum on October 10. Join Jeff, Anthony, Murray and Sam as well as Wiggly friends Dorothy The Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags The Dog and Henry The Octopus for this spectacular production, where you pick the songs you want to hear! Tickets are on sale now, click HERE to get yours.

That's all for this week. See you next Wednesday!
