Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of October 20-26: more harvest festivals, spooky animals, breakdance battles and a Science World fundraiser.

Tomorrow night, the West Richmond Community Centre is hosting a Harvest Lantern Festival. Celebrating the harvest, the event includes a variety of activities and ends with a lantern parade. Admission is by a donation to the food bank, contact the community centre for more info: 604-718-8400.

Also on the harvest front is the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House Autumn Fair this coming Saturday. The fair features a pancake breakfast, live music, arts, crafts and more. For extra fun, design and build a scarecrow to enter into the Scarecrow Making Contest.

If your kids are into breakdancing, Famous Circle is hosting the OUTBREAK Canada Bboy/Bgirl battle at the Russian Hall this Saturday. Doors open at 1pm, but spectators are suggested to show up at 4pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

On Saturday night, the Richmond Nature Park Society is hosting Wild Things: “Follow a trail of jack-o’-lanterns to discover what goes bump in the night. Meet the creatures that make Halloween fun and a little bit scary”. The event is free, children must be 4+ and accompanied by an adult.

Also on Saturday night, Science World is hosting their Maskerade family fundraiser. Your ticket includes live music, a theatre performance, dancing, food, face painting... and admission to the BODY WORLDS and the Brain exhibit. Tickets are $300/family and $100/person - it is a fundraiser afterall - and the proceeds of the event will support education programs in Search: The Sara Stern Gallery.

Finally, on Sunday the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre is hosting Halloween Hissteria, a chance for you and the kids to get up close and personal with a variety of reptiles. The event runs from 12-4pm and admission is by donation.

Here's the map. Have a great week.
