Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of October 27-November 2: Halloween, Halloween and more Halloween.

"Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker." Linus shares this bit of wisdom in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and it's worth remembering as you move from one Halloween event to another this week—and there are plenty.

If you find yourself on Granville Island this Saturday, Kidsmarket is hosting Halloweenie from 11–3:30pm. Kids in costume can trick-or-treat in the market and finish up with a free hot dog and a magic show.

Speaking of magic, Science World is hosting Magic of the imagination with Lon Mandrake and the Society of American Magicians, Assembly #95. In short, there will be 17 (yes, 17!) magicians that will “trick your brain and make you think twice about how you use your mind”. Shows run Saturday and Sunday from 11:30–3:00.

For your pumpkin fix, head to VanDusen Botanical Garden on Saturday to check out Jack O'Lantern's Spooky Stroll. “Follow the pumpkin path to view more than 125 carved and lit pumpkins in the dark and arranged in a circle route through the Garden.” Meanwhile, Anya Levykh will be doing some story-telling in the Glasshouse.

Later that evening, for the kids that are up to it, the Parade of Lost Souls returns to East Vancouver. This will be a smaller, more intimate event than years past, but it should be a great time. Public Dreams is hosting a celebration at Britannia Community Centre from 5–9pm and you can find out the location of the secret walk there or keep an eye on their Facebook page.

On Sunday, the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre is showing E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial at noon. Admission is free for kids under 17, in costume and accompanied by an adult.

When the movie is over, take the short stroll to the Vancouver Maritime Museum for A Maritime Halloween: “...pirate activities, haunted fo’c’sle, creepy crafts and ghostly activities.” The event runs from noon–4pm. Children under 10 and in costume get in for free when accompanied by an adult (two children per adult).

As a final note, I want to mention the Museum of Vancouver and their upcoming MOV Food Family Workshops. The workshops look great and I’ll be telling you more as the events get closer, but if I were you, I would look at registering now. Call 604.736.4431 and press 0.

Here’s your map. Have a fantastic Halloween.
