Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of November 10-16: Gingerbread, more Family Food Workshops, The Kerplunks, Métis culture and trains!

With Halloween a distant memory, people are beginning to get ready for Christmas—a house in my neighbourhood is already decorated and ready to go. If you’re already counting the days, you may want to check out the Gingerbread Creations Competition and Marketplace at the Hellenic Centre this Friday and Saturday. Admission is only $2 and all admission proceeds will be going to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

If you missed it last weekend, there are two more MOV Family Food Workshops taking place this weekend:

Backyard Chickens and Egg Blowing: “Coops for kids! (kidding) Learn about urban chicken coops as a family with this hands-on workshop, have fun building crafts with feathers and blowing eggs.” 10am-12pm

Window Sill Gardens: “Build an edible garden on your window sill. You will learn to grow a small garden on the window sill of your home and walk away with the first potted plan” 1pm-3pm

This Saturday, the Kerrisdale Community Centre is hosting The Kerplunks, a 4-piece, kid-friendly band that has been busy touring across western Canada. The show is 1-2PM, tickets are $9/person (2yrs+) or $30/family of four. Get the kids together and learn the words before you go.

This weekend Compaigni V’ni Dansi is hosting their 5th Annual Louis Riel Day celebrations. Friday night is a sit-down performance at the Cultch, but on Saturday they're hosting a more communal dinner and dance at the WISE Hall featuring live music by John and Vicki Arcand and traditional Métis food. If you have older kids that might be interested in fiddle music, it could be a fun introduction to Métis culture.

Finally, for those of you that have kids who love trains, considering venturing to the Cameron Recretion Centre in Burnaby this weekend to check out Trains 2010, the 28th annual model railroad exhibition. Admission varies by age, but it's cash only, so come prepared.

Here’s the map. See you next week.
