Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. Every Wednesday I post a roundup of upcoming family-friendly events and activities. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, contact me.

In The Playground for the week of January19-January 25: the family program at the VanDusen Botanical Garden, water polo clinics, Bobs & Lolo, and a Finntastic Afternoon.

Now that winter has arrived, the family program at the VanDusen Botanical Garden has moved into the Bloedel Conservatory the next three months. The January event takes place on Saturday the 22nd with a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. Prices are $10 for member families and $20 for nonmember families and you need to pre-register by calling 604-718-5198 or emailing familyprograms@vandusen.org.

For those looking for something a little more active, the Vancouver Vipers Water Polo Club is hosting a couple free water polo clinics at Kerrisdale Pool this Saturday. The 5:00-6:30 session is for kids aged 14-18 and the 6:30-8:00 is for kids under 14. No experience is necessary and you can pre-register by calling 604-264-7019 or emailing registration@vancouverwaterpolo.com.

If you have young children there's no doubt that you've hear of (and your kids love) Bobs and Lolo. This Sunday they will be performing at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver. The show gets underway at 2:00, tickets are $18 and they can be purchased online. While you're there, try to get us a celebrity high five.

Lastly we have the 2nd Annual Finntastic Afternoon of Magic, Muscles and Music! The Finntastic Afternoon is a fundraiser for Team Finn and the 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer and the event is in celebration of Finn Sullivan, an active little boy who passed away at the age of 3 because of a rare form of cancer called rhabdomyo sarcoma. The event features the magic of Zox of the Forest, the muscles of the Purple Pirate and the music of Will Stroet. It takes place on Sunday, January 23rd at Highland Elementary School in North Vancouver. Tickets are $10/adult and $5/child and can be purchased at Jack & Lola (who will be matching ticket sales up to $1000).

See you next week.
