A few weeks ago, I briefly mentioned David Oppenheimer, Vancouver's second mayor, but only in passing. It was during his time in office that Stanley Park was officially opened on September 27 1888, although discussion about the park was the first order of business during the inaugural meeting of the City Council, April 6 1886. It demonstrated a great deal of foresight to propose a park for a town-site that was literally just carved out of the wilderness!

And we Vancouverites enjoy this pocket of wilderness to this day, as do many visitors to the city. It has truly become a symbol of Vancouver, and we are lucky to have it. And thanks to melanieday, I'd like to share with you a photograph of hers from Stanley Park.

Stanley Park was, of course, named for Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, also know as Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. While living in Canada during his term as GG, his sons began to play hockey and Stanley himself became a big fan of the sport, eventually donating a trophy to hockey - the Stanley Cup (it is unclear if the 1914-1915 Stanley Cup Champion Vancouver Millionaires paraded the Cup through the park, or took it to the Stanley Theatre for that matter, but I digress).

Random tidbit: a recording of Lord Stanley's voice from 1888 is one of the oldest surviving recordings of a human voice known to exist.
