When I think of Vancouver fashion, I immediately think of the designers that have consistently produced exceptional clothing with clear and distinctive style. Dace is one of those few. The clothing line is modern without being pretentious, feminine, but not too frilly, and carefree with a sense of restraint.

I had the pleasure of interviewing founder Dace Moore as she celebrates her tenth year of designing, while also recently welcoming a new baby boy to her family.

Valerie Tiu: Did you always know that you wanted a career in fashion? How did you get started?

Dace Moore: I always knew that I liked fashion. I started out manipulating vintage patterns to create my own pieces and it just went from there.

VT: 2011 marks your 10th year of designing Dace Clothing. How has your approach to the line evolved?

DM: I think that the line grows and evolves every season. I’ve been more picky with fabrics – with the colours, quality and the hand. You’ll find my fall 2011 collection to be really silk heavy.

VT: You produce and manufacture your clothing locally. Why is it important for you to grow your business out of Vancouver?

DM: We like having a close relationship with our manufacturers and I don’t think that this is something that will ever change. If there’s a problem during production, it’s easy to take a trip to the factory to see what’s going on and solve the problem quickly. As well, why not support the community? The cost is higher – but you pay for the quality.

VT: Is there anyone in particular that you envision to be the perfect "Dace girl" or someone who fully captures the brand?

DM: We’ve always loved Francoise Hardy.

VT: What is your most significant accomplishment from the past 10 years?

DM: My new baby boy, Arrow.

VT: Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring fashion designers?

DM: Patience is the key to any success.

VT: What does the future hold for fashion in Vancouver?

DM: All these amazing stores have been opening in Vancouver. I can only envision that more and more will open.

VT: Where are your favourite places to shop in Vancouver?

DM: Two of A Few in Gastown.

VT: Where is your favourite hang out in Vancouver?

DM: Lynn Valley – my friends and I love going there to take our dogs on hikes.
