Metro Vancouver Is Awesome, and you should get out and explore it!

Nicholson Road is part of an ongoing photo project aimed at sharing and celebrating the different communities in Metro Vancouver. Each week Vancouver Is Awesome will be featuring one of the latest, most engaging photos from the project in order to draw your attention a little bit outside of the hyper-focus that we usually have on the city of Vancouver.

And here we have Steve's Drugs on a sunny evening in small town America...

Believable, right?

Look a little closer, and you might figure out this is the former Steveston Drugs, down on Moncton Street in Richmond's Steveston Village. For me, this is one of a few areas within Metro Vancouver that really feels like it could be hundreds of kilometres away from home, instead of a couple dozen - which makes it all the more awesome, and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Some of you probably know about the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, which was in operation from 1894 to 1979 and played a pretty big role in developing the local salmon canning industry (in 1897, it packed 2.5 million cans!). The Cannery opened as an interactive fishing museum in 1994, and today is recognized as a national historic site of Canada.

But get this - did you know Steveston has a second national historic site? The Britannia Heritage Shipyard is located a little to the east of the Village and features an array of beautifully restored shops, residences, canneries, boat yards, and other maritime artifacts - some of which date back to 1885. Don't think it's a ghost town though, because volunteers are continually performing restorations, and there are often a few shipwrights around working on an historic vessel or two. It's one of those places where history feels completely alive.

Looking for a daycation destination some sunny day? Give Steveston a try.
