Officially, summer in the Northern Hemisphere has begun. More importantly, summer in Vancouver has officially begun. The longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, happened yesterday and in the case of the year's longest day we certainly had a fantastic one. There were so many interesting photos submitted to the pool from yesterday that you might see a few more featured here as this week moves along - but today we will start with an image from Esther Schönwandt.

Esther shares with us a photograph a darkened Stanley Park shortly after sunset last night, and I was captivated by its sereneness - yes, that is in fact a word. And since we are speaking about words, I can only read, write and speak ones that are presented to me in one language - English. So in preparing for my post today I had to use the interweb to help me translate the title of Esther's image: Szenenwechel. Translated from German, it means 'scene change'.

One more random word fact: yesterday I learned that 'solstice' comes from two Latin words: sol meaning sun, and sistere, to stand still. Therefore solstice literally means 'sun standing still'.
