Metro Vancouver Is Awesome, and you should get out and explore it!

Nicholson Road is part of an ongoing photo project aimed at sharing and celebrating the different communities in Metro Vancouver. Each week Vancouver Is Awesome will be featuring one of the latest, most engaging photos from the project in order to draw your attention a little bit outside of the hyper-focus that we usually have on the city of Vancouver.

Moody Park, New Westminster

Earlier this week I found myself out in New Westminster and had a bit of time to kill. The sun was out, so I figured there'd be no better place than Moody Park, near 6th and 6th in Uptown, New Westminster. The park has everything you want in a park: large sports fields, an outdoor swimming pool, a playground and waterpark, a lawn bowling green, tennis courts, basketball/lacrosse box, and trails through grassy, forested areas, with plenty of picnic tables around. A new youth centre was also completed last fall, as an addition to the seniors centre, with intergenerational programs and maybe some intergenerational friendships too!

And all of this is minutes away from one of the main commercial and dense residential districts in the city. Plus, you still get great views of the mountains :)

With all the talk about Vancouver's 125th birthday this summer, did you know Moody Park was established even before the City of Vancouver? Yup, 1863. It was the first park created after the incorporation of the City of New Westminster in 1860. At that time, it was named Moody Square in commemoration of Colonel Richard Clement Moody selecting New West as the capital of BC.

Through the years, it was home to a shooting range, cricket field, and one of BC's first golf courses! In fact, it wasn't until the late 1930's that the park began to resemble Moody Park as it is today, with the completion of the football field, swimming pool, and clubhouse.

If you're ever in the area, Moody Park is a great respite from the city. You can learn more about Moody Park on the New Westminster Parks site.
