Beaty Biodiversity Museum The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is Vancouver’s only natural history museum, dedicated to creating a shared sense of community and wonder. The museum puts UBC's natural history collections, with more than two million specimens, on public view for the first time. Among our treasures are a 26-metre-long blue whale skeleton suspended in the Djavad Mowafaghian Atrium, the third-largest fish collection in the nation, and myriad fossils, shells, insects, fungi, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants from around British Columbia and the world.

Beaty Museum Oceans Festival Day

It's going to be a fun-filled weekend at the museum! Sunday is Oceans Day with a festival devoted to the giant bodies of water that surround us. We will be featuring a series of Oceans-themed activities and crafts for all ages as well as an interesting talk by Dr. Dan Ezekiel (see below for details).

A Doctor in the Freezer: My Voyage to Antarctica - Sunday, July 17 at 1:00 pm

In this special Ocean's Festival Day talk, Dr. Dan Ezekiel will relate his experiences being the ship's physician on an expedition to Antarctica. Vast and pristine, Antarctica is the largest unspoiled wilderness on Earth. If you have ever dreamed of going there, this talk will bring the White Continent to life!

Also on Sunday...

Discovering new spiders in the jungles of Ecuador - Sunday, July 17 at 2:30 pm

The mysterious forests of South America are home not only to toucans and orchids, but also to biological treasures as yet undiscovered. Last year Wayne Maddison of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum found, in a cloud forest on the slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, a species of jumping spider new to science. Dr. Maddison will tell you about the spider, its discovery, and biologists' ongoing efforts to explore the world of biodiversity. And, he'll tell you how you can help choose a name for this new species.

Later this month...
