In The Closet featuring Amaly Narong

Welcome to Vancouver Is Awesome's newest feature, "In the Closet", an intimate look into the wardrobes of stylish Vancouverites.

Welcome to Vancouver Is Awesome's newest feature, "In the Closet", an intimate look into the wardrobes of stylish Vancouverites. To kickstart this new addition, we're featuring Amaly Narong, an immensely talented jewelry designer as well as the Managing Director of Gastown gem Oak + Fort.

Amaly's style is beautifully effortless and complimented by her easy going personality. She reflects feminine minimalism that's juxtaposed with an edge in her sharp fringe and layers of metallic jewelry. While she may be modest to admit it, she is a fashion icon in the making both in her style and design.

Tell us a little about yourself...

Oh you know I'm just your average girl living in Vansteezy trying to do my thing. I currently work at OAK + FORT as the general manager, we're an independent boutique with hopes of expanding. We currently have two locations, one in Vancouver and one in Edmonton. It's been fun watching the company grow and exploring the market. We work with a group of freelance designers, located in Vancouver and Korea. We give them direction and they provide us with their definition, and it's interesting to see how people decipher concepts in their own way. I take on all sorts of duties from influencing the designs, purchasing labels and event production. I also design my own jewelry line, in which I've been working on for the past few years. It's a way of keeping the creative inspiration going and each collection has been different but I hold value to masculine qualities in all my designs. I'm currently working on my spring summer 2012.

How would you describe your style?

It's difficult to pin point my personal style. The key thing I value is comfort. It's so important to wear clothes you're comfortable in. If you're not comfortable let's just face it - you look dumb - you poser! Well, it's just that comfort exudes in your attire. It's how you communicate with others without having to even say anything; people can read it. I also am a fan of your basic neutral colours and monochromatic colour schemes. It's easier to coordinate outfits and match clothes and I hate having to put effort into dressing. If you have to put that much into your outfits, it's just sucky (my favourite word - no precise definition).

Best places to shop in Vancouver?

I am a big fan of sourcing vintage and reclaimed items. I love exploring the Croation Cultural Centre because they always have something treasure worthy when it comes to accessories. I also like to visit the Used vintage store on Granville street. They always have a great selection at a fair price point which is so so so important to me. Not to be bias but OAK + FORT is also one of my favorite stomping grounds for minimal items and interesting drapes.

What item from your wardrobe would you save if your house was on fire?

I dread that moment. Also for some reason I have recurring nightmares of this particular situation. If it were to happen, I would grab my leather glare back pack from OAK + FORT and toss ALL my jewelry in there. Throw on a cozy pair of high waisted denim pants and one of my boyfriends white t-shirt, lace up my black converse high tops and run!

What's the most sentimental piece you own?

A vintage ram head bracelet I had been in search for years. The boyfriend surprised me with it! You can find it on my wrist at all times.

Is there an outfit in your wardrobe that's hideous but you just can't part with?

All things vintage. Let's be honest, vintage attire can come off atrocious for the most part. Yet I'm always praying that one day the items will come back in fashion, so they stay folded in the back of my closet. With that said it's fun to pull them out every now and then to re-evaluate their status in my wardrobe.
