Unplugged: A Cool place to Chill

UNPLUGGED is a state of mind.

UNPLUGGED is a state of mind. It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest.

When the days are hot and sunny in Vancouver (a rare event) most people head to one of the many beaches in the city. Kits Beach, Jericho and Spanish Banks are all amazing if you can find room. There are  a number of great small lakes just minutes from downtown that offer great areas to picnic and fresh water to cool off in. One of those places that I discovered recently is Sasamat Lake in Balcara.

The main beach on Sasamat Lake is White Pine beach. On the nice days and on weekends you have to get there early to not only get parking but to snag a quality piece of real estate on the sand. This lake is so beautiful, surrounded by mountains and the refreshing water make it an ideal day of fun. Sasamat Lake is a “motor free” lake so all you will find is an array of inflatable tubes and mats. It’s a lot of fun.

There is a foot trail that loops around the entire lake which makes for a great reason for jumping in the lake and cooling off afterwards.

Dogs aren't allowed on White Pine Beach but if you go around to the other side of the lake it's open to everyone including dogs. My dog Max loves to fetch sticks here. It's his best swimming hole too.

If you’re looking for great place to have fun on fresh water this weekend, grab your inner tube and head for Sasamat Lake. It’s a blast.

Until next time. Happy Adventures.
