Before today, I knew very little about French artist Bernar Venet, or his sculpture 217.5 ARC X13. I know of the sculpture, and that it is was connected in some way to the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale. What I didn't know is that it was purchased by the Vancouver Biennale Legacy Foundation after the 2005 - 2007 biennale - the Foundation being committed to leaving a legacy of public art in Vancouver by purchasing two works from each incarnation of the festival.

But we aren't talking exclusively about a sculpture here, although I would be remiss not to provide at least some detail on it. We are also talking about a photograph that happens to feature a particular piece of public art, and how it has been received in its current environment. Again, a few things I don't know are whether or not Bernar ever foresaw his piece being used in this way, and if Marie-Eve Tanguay - whose photograph you see below - is also responsible for repurposing the sculpture herself, or if this was just a scenario she happened upon. Again, what I do know is that the result is an interesting, humourous and nicely-executed image. I can't think of a more sturdy place to set up a hammock.
