Each and every weekend we put a call out on Twitter asking our followers to tweet us fun and interesting photos of things they're coming across in and around Vancouver. The result ends up being a fun, diverse, adventure through the lenses of a great many folks who might not otherwise have their photos up on a heavily trafficked local web site. For us it's a great snapshot of what digitally-savvy Vancouverites have their eye on, and what's happening in town that weekend.
Last weekend a bunch of #occupyvancouver photos made their way into the feed and as this peaceful movement grows and could use more exposure I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for us to solicit ONLY photos from the occupation at the Vancouver Art Gallery and do a 99%ers edition this weekend.
To add to the buzz today, David Suzuki was scheduled to do a talk at #occupyvancouver, and I thought that was incredible. A few years back we had asked David Suzuki if he wanted to do a Most Awesome interview with us where he'd share all of his favourite things about the city. He declined with the reasoning that he didn't feel we should be celebrating when the distance between the rich and the poor was continuing to grow. This was years ago, and at the time I felt personally dissed but now I must express my ultimate respect for Doctor Suzuki; he is the one guy who has been championing this cause locally for a long time, somebody who has the grit and the character to decline interviews based on his ideals. The movement needs somebody like him to legitimize it for the media, and for the 99%ers who don't even know that's what they are. We won't be doing a ton of coverage on this occupation and will soon go back to our regularly-scheduled-happy-funtime programming, but this is important. We need to show it to you.
