Go for a holiday hike

UNPLUGGED is a state of mind.

UNPLUGGEDis a state of mind. It’s that point in your consciousness where you can feel at one with nature, escaping the trappings of the day-to-day to an almost dream-like place where nothing else seems to exist besides you and your natural surroundings. It is our opinion here at VIA that Vancouver holds a unique place in the civilized world in that reaching this state often requires no more effort than simply pulling off to the side of the road, pocketing your keys and taking a few steps into the forest.

If you love the outdoors as much as I do then you might have heard of the Baden Powell Trail. It’s only one of the best, longest and most enjoyable trails to explore in the area. But don’t just take my word for it you have to check it out for yourself.

I usually start in Deep Cove and take the trail to Quarry Rock where I sit and soak up the amazing view and unwind. The trail does go much further if you are adventurous. It’s such an awesome trail, the section leading to Quarry Rock is just long enough (about 1hr and a half round trip) to get the heart pumping but not too long that it takes half your day.

You can park in the public lot on Panorama Drive just past the four way stop. Then follow the sidewalk past the parking lot as it winds North. You will see a sign in between a few houses and a set of steep stairs on the left side of the street. This is where the trail begins. I usually tell people to look for the green hydro box on the boulevard and the sign is directly across the street.

The trail starts off a little steep and immediately gets your blood flowing. There are a number of bridges that cross over waterfalls and plenty of amazing West Coast forest to take your breath away.

Once you reach Quarry Rock just sit back and soak it all in. You get an amazing view of the entire Deep Cove and Indian Arm area. Don’t be surprised if you’re not the only one up there. It’s a popular spot and people like to make it a weekend ritual. And now you can too.

Afterwards I like to head into Deep Cove and have a treat. One of our rituals is to indulge in a “Deep Cove Donut”. If you’ve never had one you have to. They’re a baseball size bundle of sweet, doughy, goodness. One is all you will need. You can get them at Honey Donuts and Goodies.

I hope you get a chance to go this weekend. It’s still free of snow but make sure you wear layers, as it can be a bit cooler this time of year.

I hope you enjoy it.

Until next time. Happy adventures.
