Chuck D's response to our question!

Last week I made THIS BLOG POST about the rap group Public Enemy and the Georgia Straight's short-lived old punk newspaper by the same name.

Last week I made THIS BLOG POST about the rap group Public Enemy and the Georgia Straight's short-lived old punk newspaper by the same name. Both PE's share a very similar logo so I posed the question of it being coincidence or if perhaps there was a bit of thievery that happened with the design.

To be honest, the design is so basic and there were such a limited amount of typefaces available in previous decades (as I mentioned in that original post) that if I was putting a wager on it I would bet it was a coincidence. Canadian Business magazine staff writer Jeff Beer tweeted THIS to Chuck D... and he answered!

Chuck didn't actually see the link to our blog post before he sent that tweet above, so Jeff then sent it along, and this is what Chuck had to say:

I believe it. But now my question is WHAT DID THE LOGO FOR THAT MOVIE ABOUT ALVIN KARPIS LOOK LIKE? Did it use the Stencil typeface? This might be a question that only our friends at Videomatica can solve, as I checked IMDB and could only find a 1974 TV movie about public enemy number one and no other info about it anywhere. Stay tuned as we continue to unravel this mystery!
