WE ARE VANCVR: Amy Pelletier Beck, photographer

Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community. VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Amy Pelletier Beck is a refreshing anomaly among Vancouver's creatives. In a city full of talented urban photographers shooting daily life, Amy brings an artist's eye to carefully curated shoots. Her Magritte-esque conceptual photography skillfully breaks down our relationships with objects. Her portraits are art directed yet captivating. The Emily Carr grad has shown her work throughout Vancouver—with solo shows at lowercase gallery and Malaspina Printmaker's Society—and has had other exhibits in Toronto, Victoria and New York. Her work's been published in Prefix Photo Magazine and Pyramid Power Magazine. Nice! Keep reading to find out how she'd like to collaborate with other creatives in Vancouver. Collector, 2009 Studio Visits, 2008-2012 Insignia, 2006 Hatchet Forest Island, 2011-2012 What do you do? I am a Photographer, Artist and Project Manager at Edelman Canada. I have a conceptual art practice, and also like to shoot commercially. I am not one of those photographers who always has their camera with them—I prefer to plan and stage moments and ideas based on things I have seen, read about, imagined or pieced together. Past projects have included 'Collector' where I photographed every item from purchased collections that were being sold by their original collector or their estate, usually due to death. Currently I am working on a series of still life photos based on the young adult novel Hatchet, titled 'Hatchet Forest Island'.

Why do you love being a creative in Vancouver?

I love my friends, and they mostly live here. In the summer the beaches in Vancouver are heavenly and in the winter, well, we are close to Hawaii! Also, I adore Vancouver's photo conceptualist history. It's fun to live in a city where you can have Rodney Graham sightings.

How would you like to collaborate with other local creatives?

A few ways: I have been doing a serial portrait project for a while where I am photographing creative people in their spaces/studios. That's the kind of collaboration I would like to continue to do—photographing artists in their work environments. It's almost like a visual interview. I also like to do casual creative collaborations with stylists and designers, where the result is somewhat of a fashion portrait. I have also been wanting to collaborate with a wide variety of musicians to record a project based on my  'Collector' series.
