WE ARE VANCVR: Nathan Skillen, videographer

Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community. VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Nathan Skillen is a rarity in the We Are Vancvr community—he's a videographer, and only a videographer. In the last five years he's worked the gamut of production roles around Vancouver for clients as diverse as Coca-cola and the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Today the BCIT grad gets to focus on what he loves—events and music, shooting Green Couch Sessions and videos for local bands.

Read on to find out why he loves being a creative in Vancouver.

What do you do?

I'm a freelance video director and videographer, mostly focusing on music-related projects like music videos, concert videos and live music sessions with Green Couch Sessions. I also shoot event and corporate videos, and documentary and short film when I can. I've been mapping out my niches, while traveling around and trying some entrepreneurial ventures. Recently I've started working with Radio Toxic which is pretty cool!

Why do you love being a creative in Vancouver?

I once heard Emotionz say that Vancouver is like London: we have grey, miserable weather most of the year which actually is a boom for creative production, as people stay inside and produce. I believe it. There's lots of opportunity when the right people come together to make beautiful things happen, we just need to see more hubs of creativity. There is huge opportunity here.

How would you like to collaborate with other local creatives?

I'm always looking to meet and collaborate with new people—especially in music, film, interactive/web and related, so hit me up. I like working in a "creative hub" atmosphere—it's energizing to be surrounded by other creative people all working on the same or similar projects. I'd love to help build more spaces and groups that bring together talent in this city.
