For Part Two of The Inseam Vol. 27, I chat with designer Jude Feller. Formerly of local contemporary label, lily + jae, Jude has recently made her debut with Lifetime’s Spring/Summer 2012 Women’s Collection.  The result is a fresh take on the brand: clothing that is distinctly feminine, easy and wearable, yet blends seamlessly with the men’s collection. We discuss Jude’s collection, her design process and how working for Lifetime has become a memorable experience.

Valerie Tiu: Did you always know that you wanted to work in fashion?

Jude Feller: Always. Starting in high school.

VT: What was your first fashion memory?

JF: A fashion show in high school. It was a collection of Velour tracksuits in 1995. Haha....

VT: This is your first collaboration with Lifetime Collective. How did you make the transition from designing your personal line, lily + jae, to designing for Lifetime?

JF: I actually found the transition to be really natural. I think my design aesthetic is a really great fit for the Collective. I always had a place for the tomboy and a place for the girly girl at lily + jae. At Lifetime, we're going for a similar concept with the new collection so it works well.

VT: Can you talk about the Spring 2012 Women's collection? Where did you derive your ideas?

JF: The collection is about reintroducing the Lifetime woman as an individual. Rather than having a women's version of the men's collection, she has an identity of her own. For the first time, we have introduced prints to offer a more feminine feel for the Lifetime customer. We also have women's specific colour-ways that push the feminine side of the brand along with unisex fabrics to cross over. We have done a beautiful group of novelty sweaters and had them made in Italy. These are all new elements to set the new collection apart from the old.

VT: Can you take us through your design process?

JF: I start with colour. Then I develop a concept for the collection and build inspiration boards. With these two tools in place, I source fabrics, prints and patterns for the season.

From there I source other reference materials to work with and begin to draw and then develop prototypes.

VT: Can you describe the Lifetime woman?

JF: As mentioned earlier, she is being reintroduced as an evolved woman. She is both casual and pretty. She is well dressed but comfortable. She is inspired by other arts, music and fashion and generally by the people surrounding her.

VT: What was your most memorable experience in working with Lifetime?

JF: I have to say that our sales meeting for Spring/Summer 2012 in Galliano was pretty amazing. A group of really creative people came together in a beautiful place, so removed from the rest of the industry.
