Something incredible happened at the Vancouver Magazine 2012 Restaurant Awards

I was invited to the 23rd annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards reception and ceremony that took place at the Sheraton Wall Centre yesterday. It was the first time I'd been and while I knew I was out of my element (I am horribly under-qualified when it comes to writing about food) I was wearing a tie and there were a bunch of friendly faces that I ran into and got to jam with. Mark Brand from Save On Meats and Alex Rhek from Sea Monstr Sushi, our very own Christine McAvoy along with Leigh Eldridge from Music BC, Erin Ireland from It's To Die For and, last but not least, my new friends Michael Eckford and Fiona Forbes who hosted the 800-people-deep awards ceremony.

Christine shot photos of the entire thing and I imagine she'll flush out a more photo-heavy piece on it so I figured I'd simply point out one incredibly coincidental thing that happened. It's actually scary it's such a coincidence.

So. Remember the VIDEO I shared last week of the CreativeMornings lecture I gave about fishing and creativity and Vancouver Is Awesome where I talked about the endangered Fraser River White Sturgeon and that if you catch one and kill it you go to jail? Since catching and tagging/releasing one for the sake of conservation I had been daydreaming about that giant, 150 pound fish wondering what it might taste like. The forbidden fruit... or not! Turns out there's a company from Sechelt called Northern Divine who, for the past decade or so have been raising the exact same species of sturgeon that lives in the Fraser, but in giant tanks. And they were serving this sturgeon today during the reception!

Fraser River White Sturgeon

I don't believe in fate but upon being dished out the above Fraser River White Sturgeon by one of the Sheraton Wall Centre chefs I couldn't help but feel like some strange energy brought me to it.
