The Rio Theatre's Friday Late Night Movies return!

Not long ago we shared the NEWS that the Rio Theatre was back in business after working hard with a group of their friends and fellow business owners to petition the provincial government to allow them to serve alcohol and play movies. During that push, there was a time when they weren't technically allowed to show movies at all, and January 20th was the last time that their Friday Late Night Movies were shown. Late Night Movies is a monthly schedule of classics that play every Friday, where you get a discount if you come in costume, and which V.I.A. has been sponsoring for some time now.

We're happy to share the news today that Friday Late Night Movies at the Rio are back for May! I asked the Rio's owner, Corrine Lea, if she'd share some thoughts on them with us, and here's what she had to say:

"During the Ban on movies at the Rio by the LCLB, people would ask me why don't you just become a concert hall? One reason was financial, it's tough to fill a venue 7 days a week with concerts alone, but the main reason was because we LOVE movies. And we especially missed our Friday midnight crowd who come out late dressed up in costume having a great time shouting out the lines to films they've seen a bunch of times. It's so much fun because we're all a bunch of film geeks! And I believe strongly that no bureaucrat should be able to shut down arts and culture in BC. They live in Victoria, what do they know about Rio midnight movies and why people love them so much? Once issues of public safety have been addressed it's no business of the government what kind of art or entertainment people enjoy."
