Coast Modern documentary highlights Modernist architecture from California to Vancouver BC

It was in 2009 that I first caught wind of Gavin Froome and Mike Bernard's independent film, Coast Modern, and I was thrilled when it finally screened at the DOXA festival this year. They've taken the time to craft a beautiful film on a beautiful subject; Modernist homes from California to Oregon then Washington and up to our fair city.

Through interviews with architects, professors, architecture critics, writers, and residents who actually live in homes designed in this style of architecture, Gavin and Mike reveal what makes it what it is. Some talk generally on the subject while others expatiate on specific homes, and it's all woven together with outstanding camerawork showcasing what Ray Kappe claims brings people "closer to the reality of what the world is about".

In the film, architect Michelle Kaufmann also states that "Modernism is not a style, it's a way of thinking". Have a look at the trailer below then get immersed deep in thought at the Vancity Theatre as Coast Modern is playing there from July 6th until the 12th. Gavin Froome and Mike Bernard will be in attendance this Friday and Saturday, so you might want to show up early to insure you get a seat.
