Creative Mornings

The speaker for the July 6th, 2012 edition of CreativeMornings/Vancouver was lawyer, entrepreneur, publisher, radio panelist, digital media innovator, arts advocate and self-titled "junk yard dog" Sandy Garossino. As I’ve said many times when people ask me about the inspiration behind CreativeMornings, I’m disappointed at how poorly understood the concept of creativity is outside traditional creative and art circles. I feel it’s important to broaden the conversation and invite diverse opinions from experts in various fields who have unique perspectives on art, culture and creativity. Hence Sandy Garossino.

Sandy gave the audience a thought-provoking talk about the primal and elemental nature of creativity, and how essential it is for building a culture of humanity. Themes in her presentation included the debt we owe to creative innovators and responsibility we have to honour them if we want our civilization to survive—especially in cities as young as Vancouver. Touching on topics from women in creative professions (her daughter Claire is the popular indie musician known as Grimes) to the need to protect democracy on the Internet, Garossino engaged the audience with her inspiring ideas and thoughtful challenges, ending the morning with a call to arms to everyone in the room and watching to raise the statue of arts & culture, and increase the value of creativity as a way to build a great city.

CreativeMornings/Vancouver was produced with the support of Hootsuite and hosted by W2 Media Café & GDC/BC. For information on past and future CreativeMornings events, please visit the website www.creativemornings.com.
