The Village on False Creek Welcome to In The Village on False Creek, a unique project inspired by Live@YVR and 365 Days of Dining. I've moved my family into this community with my mission being to showcase the myriad of things that make it awesome by bringing you a weekly scoop!

Remember the little event that rolled through Vancouver in 2010? The one that left us with a greater sense of Canadian pride and also in its wake left no less than 2 cutting-edge community centres, a new Sea to Sky Highway, a new convention centre, a Skytrain to the airport, and was the driver behind the construction of this neighbourhood that I live in? The Village on False Creek was the epicentre of the Olympic action back when it was known as the Athlete's Village and housed the world's athletes who were competing in the Games. The spirit of the Games will always be contained within its fibres as it is part of a massively positive legacy that was left to us.

The neighbourhood itself is large a reminder of the Vancouver 2010 awesomeness and within it are smaller ones, like this sculpture right outside of Tap & Barrel that tells the story of the medals and how they were made.

Former Chief Planner for the City of Vancouver, Brent Toderian, calls The Village "a globally applauded and highly studied model for green and livable community planning and design" and adds that "it's been called one of the best new developments in the world by noted urbanists such as Jan Gehl and Ken Greenberg". In this series it's my aim to show you - not from a city planner's view but as a resident - how awesome it really is down here.

Hop on your bike and pay us a visit during London 2012.

Located on the seawall at One Athletes Way, the new Tap & Barrel restaurant (which I SHARED last week) has a multitude of flat screen TVs currently playing the Olympics. It's connected to the Creekside Community Centre which also houses Canadian Sport Centre Pacific (1, 2 articles) which helps train and assist Canada's Olympic athletes.

Glance away from those screens and you'll get this gold medal view of your city.

If a quieter venue is up your alley, the restaurant section of the Urban Fare (which I SHARED a few weeks back) has a couple of TVs that they're playing the 2012 Games on as well. They prepare hot meals all day as well as serving coffee and beer (whatever floats your boat), and lately the bay windows have been wide open letting in a nice breeze.

Our Olympians have already made us proud by winning a multitude of medals in 2012 and they're on par to claim more before the closing ceremonies this Sunday. Let's hope that our sailing team fares better than THIS GUY did a few weeks back when he temporarily shipwrecked on Habitat Island (which I'll be giving you a tour of soon)!

Let's also hope, for London's sake, that their Olympic legacies benefit the residents of their city as much as ours do.
