Have you heard about Canada's newest apple breed, the Salish? They held the naming ceremony and unveiling of it at this past weekend's Apple Fest at the UBC Botanical Garden and we were fortunate to get our hands on a bag of the apple formerly known as SPA493cv ("Salish" just has such a better ring to it, right?). This apple is a combination of a Splendour and a Gala and is the culmination of 25 years of traditional cross-pollination methods of breeding. 15 BC orchardists are already committed to growing it and it will soon be available in Urban Fare, Choices, Marketplace IGA, Whole Foods and other Vancouver retailers.

I'm no expert on pomaceous fruits but the Salish is certainly an improvement on the Gala, once my favourite apple. Yum!
