It’s time for the Laneways! VHF’s 3rd annual Laneway House Tour is coming up this Saturday and we are showcasing some very small spaces, with a huge amount of style. Our tour this year has the first lane house to be approved without a garage or parking pad in Vancouver. Another laneway house on tour has 2 bedrooms in under 600 sq. ft! Now that’s an efficient use of space!
As a foundation dedicated to heritage preservation we often get asked why laneway houses? Our interest is that Laneway houses can be a means to save heritage homes from demolition while still increasing density demands in Vancouver. VHF is opening 7 laneways that are located behind existing houses, not new construction. We also do our best to include lane homes that complement the existing house in style and scale. Laneway houses can offer homeowners a creative solution to housing family members, creating income from their property in an increasingly expensive city, and densify neighbourhoods with minimal altering to the streetscape.
Have questions about building one? The builders of the homes on our tour will be available to chat about the process, the materials, the end result and anything else you can think to ask them. Vancity representatives will also be around to answer any questions about financing options for building a lane home.
You can buy a ticket now and pick it up in our office until Friday 4pm/tour day at Info Booth. If you wake up Saturday morning (Oct 20th) and decide to join the tour, head over to Dunbar Community Centre at 4747 Dunbar St. and get yours at our Info Booth inside! We’ll be there from 12pm-4pm, and the houses will be open from from 1-5pm for the self guided tour, so head for the lanes!
