It may only be Fall (and feeling a lot like Winter), but VHF is looking ahead to Spring when we're going Old School! Open to everyone, from owners and renters of old buildings, to handy folks who see the creative potential of salvaged materials, these hands-on heritage workshops let you learn from the experts!
Got a wood window that won't stay open or maybe doesn't open at all? The image above has Jim Stiven of Vintage Woodworks showing how to get a painted shut wood window open (we love it when they don't get thrown out or replaced with vinyl). He'll also teach you how to fix the weights that counter balance your double hung windows with VHF in April 2013. Repaired and maintained wood windows can last for 100 years or longer, and prove to be more cost effective than new ones. (They also look nicer, or so we think).
Typical homes built in the early 20th century had lath and plaster walls. No idea what lath is? Lloyd Cutting, the Mud Slinger and 40 year master plasterer is offering a simple repairs course with VHF in February 2013. Lath is thin wood strips nailed directly onto the framing of a house which it typically covered with plaster. Done right it can give an incredibly smooth and soft finish. Join the Mud Slinger himself for all sorts of tips and best practices for repairing it. Below you'll see a lovely before and after shot of some lath and plaster repaired!
