So here's one of the best pieces of news you'll hear all month: The team behind the Waldorf Hotel are partnering with the team behind the Rickshaw to transform the infamous Fox Cinema on Main Street into a new venue that won't be full of people masturbating to 70's porno films!

I oversimplified it with the headline but essentially what's happening is that Thomas Anselmi, Danny Fazio and Ernesto Gomez from Waldorf Productions (those would be the folks who made the Waldorf what it was when it was revived) are partnering up with David Duprey and Rachel Zottenberg (those would be The Narrow, Rumpus Room and Rickshaw peeps) and have just signed the lease on the building at 2321 Main Street that up until now housed an old porno theatre that neighbours had unsuccessfully tried to get shut down in recent years.

"We are hoping to do something exciting, fun, and progressive with the space but we have a long way to go," says Duprey, who is hoping that the venue - The Fox Cabaret - will be open by the fall.

"City Hall is extremely supportive of the project. Though sorting out the proper licensing is never easy, we're confident we can be up and running quickly and create the kind of venue that Vancouver could really use right now."

I can't help but think that this is exactly the place that Waldorf Productions should have been all along. It was fantastic that they built a cultural oasis out there on Hastings (it was BEYOND FANTASTIC), but this Mount Pleasant location seems to be pitch perfect for the crowd that they attract. Once that whole skytrain / LRT / whatever situation gets sorted out it'll be dropping people off practically on their front doorstep. My neighbours and I in Southeast False Creek will have a new spot to walk to, as will every human (over the age of 19?) living South of 1st Avenue.
