After the doors are locked and the sign is flipped to "closed," a small independent pet store on Hastings and Templeton that is loaded with affordable, healthy, and socially conscious pet supplies has quickly become one of my favorite places to sit on the floor, have a few drinks and share endless pet stories of trial and triumph. Proceedings are always presided over by the regal resident store cats, Ritchie Catmore (the scratchy) and Ronnie James Meow (the lover.)

Long Live Cats and Dogs, owned by best friends Kristy Clark and Alexis Murphy, doubles as headquarters for a new animal charity organization, Neuterhead: Ace of Spays the two started with graphic designer, Rheanna Diane, and members from local metal band, 3 Inches of Blood; Shane Clark and Justin Hagberg. "We had some shirts made for the store and they started selling really well, and we thought that money could go to charity," says Kristy, "and then Shane came up with the name Neuterhead: Ace of Spays [a play on Motorhead: Ace of Spades for anyone new to music] and it kind of rolled into a non-profit from there."

The group has raised almost $2000 since January, and will be announcing which rescue group they will be donating the money to at their launch party this Saturday. Every 6-12 months they choose a new group to receive the money raised, which is designated to help assist with the cost of spays and neuters.

Neuterhead merchandise has gone on tour across North America with 3 Inches of Blood and is now being worn by animal lovers from Victoria to Florida.  "Neuterhead has been so successful on the road," says guitarist, Justin Hagberg, "and it's so inspiring to see so many people supporting and even offering their services to assist with the neuterhead campaign."

Shane Clark will be at the Rickshaw Theatre hosting the event this weekend which includes a number of local band members playing covers of songs from Rush, Pentagram, and Saint Vitus.  There are said to be two surprise bands to join the lineup, so far left unannounced! Exciting and mysterious, right?
