The WISE Hall

Founded in 1958 as a members club for ex-patriots from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England, The WISE Social & Athletic Club would convert a dilapidated church hall to become a centre for arts and culture on the east side. In 1963 WISE purchased the Gymbodian Hall from the neighbouring Grandview Methodist Church, and renamed it the WISE Hall. As Gymbodian Hall it had been used as a gymnasium, bowling alley and kindergarten, as WISE Hall it has been an important venue to the diverse community of Vancouver’s east side.

Over the last 50 years, the WISE has evolved and diversified beyond the original UK traditions and culture to embrace the entire East Side social, arts and cultural community. The WISE has had many amazing musical artists grace her stage, including, but certainly not limited to: Long John Baldry, Carole Pope, Don Ross, The Toasters, Gaye Delorme, Ray Condo, SNFU, Garnet Rogers, Cousin Harley, Sal Ferreras, Neko Case, Ladyhawk, Veda Hille, Rich Hope, Carolyn Mark and Youth Brigade. Today the WISE Hall is an affordable and accessible space for the whole community to gather, perform and celebrate.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s Places That Matter will be celebrating the WISE Hall’s contributions to culture on the east side with a plaque presentation on Friday, August 9th at 7:30 pm. Come join us to celebrate the history of this hall, and stick around for a night of great music and a silent auction. Meet outside the WISE Hall,1882 Adanac Street at Victoria Drive. See the invitation here.

WISE Hall wants your help! WISE has recently been faced with noise complaints. Though not in danger of closing, they have taken action by bringing in additional weekend security, a dedicated smoking area, and increased signage inside and outside the club warning patrons about noise and smoking regulations. They are also looking at increasing the sound proofing inside the building and are running an Indiegogo campaign to help raise the funds. Completing these renovations ensure that WISE can continue to host the great events they are known for. The fundraising drive will culminate with a benefit concert featuring The Odds on August 9. Get your tickets here, because that is sure to be a truly awesome show.
