If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap".

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap". In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

There's a lot of cool outdoor events happening in the summer, and one is just outside the city in New West. It's Shadows & Dreams Theatre's annual Shakespeare production in Queen's Park. Every summer these folks put together a fun, accessible, and FREE production of a beloved Shakespeare script, this year playing with The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shakespeare usually comes off as a little stuffy and meant for a certain "class" of person, but what I love about Shadows & Dreams is how easily they toss those preconceptions out of the water. This crew really makes the Bard's sometimes-ridiculously-cryptic text easy to understand and a lot of fun.

Some tips should you make the journey out to the Queen's Park bandshell:

There are no tickets or reservations for this event, and it's pretty popular, so show up early to claim your spot.

There is bench seating already there for the bandshell, but if you bring a blanket you can sit on the grass closer to the stage. This will give you the double bonus of being more comfortable and able to hear more of what's happening on stage.

If you're transiting out, the park is about a 20 minute walk from the skytrain, so plan ahead!
