Did you know that British Columbia is now the biggest highbush blueberry-growing region in the world, with more than $1 billion in sales in the past five years? Did you also know that a single blueberry bush can produce as many as 6,000 blueberries per year, and that this year was a bumper crop for local farmers? Lastly, did you know that blueberries have only 80 calories per cup, are virtually fat-free and are a good source of fibre and vitamin C? I know this because the BC Blueberry Council dropped some knowledge on me along with a few pounds of fresh, organic blueberries.
We're nearing the end of fresh blueberry season and over the past few days have been eating them by the handful over here. My wife has also been putting together some AMAZING desserts with them. This is one local crop that's hard to beat. Enjoy!
