YVR x Flip: A Typhoon Haiyan Fundraiser
Since Typhoon Haiyan struck the eastern seaboard of the Philippines on Friday, November 8th, teams of medics, aid workers and volunteers have been scrambling to provide basic necessities to the victims of one of the most powerful tropical storms humankind has ever seen. (By UN estimates, over 11 million people in total have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan.)
Though it is a paralyzingly bleak situation, the support that has risen up locally, nationally, and internationally has been inspiring. Tin Buenavista, a correspondent living in typhoon-stricken Iloilo and founder of grassroots aid organization Batak Barotac, writes of good news as bands of volunteers deliver packages of food and water to coastal communities, helping to salvage and rebuild as they go. As the Canadian government is matching charitable donations to Typhoon Haiyan relief until December 8, 2013, now is a critical time to give what we can.
With this in mind, myself and a group of young Vancouver creatives are hosting YVR x Flip, a fundraiser for Typhoon Haiyan relief, at East Van Studios this Friday, November 29th. We know that Vancouver’s vibrant community has a lot to give, and the support so far has been incredible as local businesses from East Van's Arrival Agency to Yaletown's The Beauty Mark have donated prizes, products, and funds to the event. It's been heartening to have such an enthusiastic response from people who were, until we reached out to them, total strangers. This community-wide generosity and awareness is just one of the things that makes Vancouver truly awesome.
All proceeds from YVR x Flip will go directly to The Philippine Red Cross’ aid effort and Batak Barotac, providing crucial funding for the medical supplies, food, water, and transportation that are needed urgently in all typhoon-affected areas.
