VERY RARE is a collection of recent works by Ben Barber. Comprised of paintings, sculptures and other media VERY RARE displays works that explore the means of which culture becomes fetish and products turn to icons. Using well known objects from daily life countered with art motif’s the viewer is given a view into a world that is uncomfortable yet seemingly familiar.
Born 1989 in Vancouver, Ben is a multidisciplinary artist and designer with a BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He works out of one of Vancouver’s major artist hubs, 1000 Parker St studios. His artwork explores the means of which common cultural objects’ exceed their banality and reach a fetishized status through constant recurrence in fashion, film, advertising, etc. An unwritten myth begins to form that we all agree upon. Coupled with well-known art themes the experience becomes both comedic and dismal as find a discomforting pleasure with what we see.
