Vancouver Is Awesome is a proud sponsor of The Chinatown Experiment, a storefront dedicated to pop ups which provides anyone that has an idea and the desire to bring it to life with the opportunity to make it happen. Every time a new pop up is about to launch you'll catch a sneak peek here!

Fei Disbrow and Monica Berdin bring together art and design in their “Continuum: Art + Design” pop up event.

Through entirely different working methods and use of materials, they have independently created bodies of work that exhibit as a coherent whole. Fei and Monica are similarly attracted to empathetic materials and are influenced by the body: how it is used, seen and acts within our cultural context.

For Continuum, Fei exhibits three series of work: serigraphs, sewn sculptures and threaded wall-mounted sculptures. Each piece manifests an abstraction of her interest in the body and its external influences. Her work is motivated by the drivers of attraction and repulsion. The resulting work though clean and elegant, can also be discomforting. Monica presents a collection of wearable pieces in varied chain weight. They are joined by leather, pearls, and small silver forms. The work is intended to be an investigation by the wearer. The designs are clean and simple, yet each piece takes many forms and can be combined together. The work balances on the body and draws a connection between the piece and the wearer. The act of adornment is where the ritual of discovery begins.

Fei Disbrow earned her Masters in Fine Art from the sculpture department at Cranbook Academy of Art in Michigan in 2004. Since then Fei has been in numerous solo and juried shows throughout the United States and Canada. In 2005, Fei was awarded a public art grant in Portland, Oregon and a residency with the Intermedia Department at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. After moving to Toronto, she was awarded the MST Bronze Award at the Emerging Sculptors Exhibition, at the Canadian Sculpture Centre in Toronto in 2006. In 2008, she was granted a term in the Guest Renter Program at Open Studios in Toronto. Since returning to Vancouver in 2009, Fei has continued to exhibit in both solo and juried shows, most recently at the Initial Gallery in Vancouver. Her work resides in the Portland Art Museum print collection, in addition to being part of both corporate and private collections.

Monica Berdin altered her pursuits in life shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Interior Design (b.i.d.) from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Architecture and traveling to Cairo, Egypt with the University of British Columbia, School of Architecture. Armed with a firmly entrenched design process, Monica returned to Vancouver, British Columbia to further carry her design studies into the discipline of Goldsmith/Jewellery.
