Telling a kid that they’re going to spend part of their summer vacation in a writing class could be seen by some as a punishment. But when the writing takes place in a fun, adventurous, and creative environment, and is led by some of Vancouver’s most experienced and notable writers and editors, we’ll bet most kids would be alright with picking up a pencil during a few days of their seasonal academic exile.

The Academy For Young Writers, Pirates, Astronauts, and Wizards is a downtown eastside based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages six to sixteen with creative and expository writing skills and imagination facilitation. With topics like “Pirate Tales from the Seven Seas,” “Screenwriting 101” and a workshop on live music reviewing and interviews following an in-house performance, the Academy provides an innovative and inspiring writing environment that allows kids to find their own voice, and use it with confidence.

The Academy’s services are structured around the understanding that writing skills are fundamental to future success and that creative environments foster creative expression. Student’s work will be featured in a magazine and blog both published by the Academy.

This summer, workshops take place at Strathcona Community Center on select weekends in July and August for ages 11-14 and 14-16. Visit THE ACADEMY'S WEBSITE to view the schedule and register. All workshops are free of cost.
