When "dead bodies as far as the eye can see" is actually a good thing

Our friends at the Pacific Salmon Foundation shared this fairly intense photo today of the 2010 sockeye salmon run that made its way up the Fraser River and into the Adam's near Salmon Arm.

Our friends at the Pacific Salmon Foundation shared this fairly intense photo today of the 2010 sockeye salmon run that made its way up the Fraser River and into the Adam's near Salmon Arm. The good thing about this photo of their corpses is not only the number of them which returned to spawn and will help sustain the population but also the nutrients that they offered the surrounding ecosystem after their inevitable death. The healthy forest surrounding the river is given a "nutrient bomb" every four years when the runs get really large like this.

How do they know when there are going to be record runs of salmon returning to the rivers? The Vancouver Sun published THIS feature today on exactly that. It's a fascinating read.
