About: Alex Henderson is an industrial designer from Vancouver. She has become known for her innovative use of wood and her highly detailed laser-cut designs that are whimsical, warm and nostalgic. She strives to reinvent wood as a medium through unexpected applications.  Equally important in her work are commissioned projects that provide her a bridge to explore her art. Her designs, ranging from custom door panels to installations and sculpture, have led to project collaborations with architects and furniture designers. Alex currently owns and operates her own design company Henderson Dry Goods, for which she makes a variety of home goods and fashion accessories made almost exclusively out of wood.

Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to design.

I knew I wanted to be a designer at the age of 15 after discovering Terence Conran. At that age I set my sights on Emily Carr and in 2003 I entered their Industrial Design Program. I graduated in 2006.

What's your personal design philosophy?

I try to trust my instincts and use what I have around me; be it resources, great people, or inspiration.

Could you describe your process?

It differs depending on what I'm trying to produce. But I usually start by with a drawing (most often on the computer) but I try to move into 3D as soon as possible, even if it's a really rough mock-up. Then I work through the idea until it feels right (and doesn't break).

How do you approach a new project?

With the seed of an idea that has been planted somewhere along the way.

Which materials do you use the most?

Wood.

What is your most cherished tool?

My laser cutter, no question.

How does laser cutting play a role in your design process?

It cuts things for me. It's a means to an end. But I definitely design for the tight tolerances possible with laser cutting.

What parts of your work do you do by hand?

Even though I use a laser cutter, a huge amount of what I do involves working with my hands. I would say more than 50%

Which of your designs or projects are you most excited about right now and why? Are there any makers you like and recommend?

My Christmas ornaments are pretty fun for me to design. I am always gratified by how much people seem to like them.

I really like the work of Haptic Lab out of Brooklyn.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your design process?

As cliché as it is, making mistakes is the best way to learn. I am screwing up constantly and I am better designer and business person for it.
