It’s hard to believe now but 100 years ago False Creek was a filthy, noisy industrial waterway lined with sawmills, shipyards, asphalt plants and a barrel factory. Burrard Inlet was alive with the docks, iron foundries, canneries and and even an aircraft factory. Today, the shoreline has undergone an extraordinary transformation.

Do you want to see how our waterfront has changed? On Thursday, October 2nd, 6:30pm-8pm, civic historian and author John Atkin gives a public talk on the history of Burrard Inlet and False Creek at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Click here to reserve your free tickets now.

Atkin's talk is part of the lead up to Water’s Edge Day on October 5th at the Vancouver Maritime Museum (10am-5pm). Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) invites you to bring your friends and family and come down to the shore for a day of cool activities exploring the waterfront, including free boat and cycle tours, bird walks, First Nation canoe tours, art workshops and more. Get all the details here.

Plus, you can win great prizes starting right now with the #MyVanWaterfront community mapping contest featured on this blog: Until October 5th, you can post your favourite pictures, stories and places on instagram, twitter or via the Georgia Strait Alliance's website. Make sure to use the hashtag #MyVanWaterfront and tag your location and you get a chance to win a scenic flight with Helijet to Victoria and other cool prizes that will be drawn on Water's Edge Day (all details here)
