If you missed Michael Kluckner's 2013 talk at SFU, " A Brief History of Gentrification in Vancouver", be sure to join VHF for Michael's self-dubbed "son of gentrification" lecture next Tuesday, September 30th starting at 7:30pm at the University Women’s Club at Hycroft, 1489 McRae Avenue. This time Michael will present "Heritage, Gentrification and the Future of Vancouver" for VHF's Evening Lecture Series at Hycroft. You can register online, by calling the office at 604-264-9642, or show up with your $12 in hand. We are expecting a large crowd for this one, so be sure to arrive early to get the best seats.
Author and artist, Michael Kluckner presents an illustrated historical overview, ranging from the ‘degentrification’ decades before the 1960s to the urban-renewal era and the beginnings, in Strathcona and Kitsilano in the 1970s, of the modern trend toward fixing up deteriorated old buildings in the city’s vintage neighbourhoods. He will make the connection between gentrification and the rehabilitation of old buildings (a positive result) while noting that the only alternative is new buildings in their place. Michael will look at how the social changes in gentrifying neighbourhoods are affecting our cultural heritage. Michael will also present some of his own ideas and and suggestions on policy changes that all three levels of government could introduce that would slow this rate of change.
