Hey parents! get blinded with science this week in Vancouver

I think I have to preface this post with the fact that I am an under-cover nerd. For those that know me, they can vouch that I take pride in being a bit of a know-it-all, and I'd take a WIRED Magazine over Cosmo any day of the week.

I think I have to preface this post with the fact that I am an under-cover nerd. For those that know me, they can vouch that I take pride in being a bit of a know-it-all, and I'd take a WIRED Magazine over Cosmo any day of the week. If you are like me, or your kids are, then this is the list for you. I've searched-out some great science-based events for you to explore in the city this week – one of which is completely free! We are keen to attend these, so if you see me there, say hello, and we can nerd-out over some liquid nitrogen ice cream.

H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

Want to learn more about our planet, space exploration, or the Universe in general? The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is a hidden gem for the budding space enthusiast, or the mom (like me) who has no idea how to answer questions about inter-galactic this and that. After finally getting around to watching all the original Start Wars movies, my kids are keen to find out as much as they can about all things ‘outer space.’ If you want to ease into it, check out the Saturn-5 Saturdays family activities events at the Space Centre.

This Saturday, October 18th, you’re invited to take part in “Cosmic Costumes” –  They write:

“Get into the Halloween spirit early! This year, add some Like-Nothing-On-Earth sparkle to your costume. Join the Space Centre staff and create your very own Halloween Haunted Hat. Maybe a little Solar System bling can give your Halloween hat some star-like quality. We will guide you on this activity and provide the supplies. You just need to put on your creative-hat and your knowledge of our Solar System.”

The event is free with admission, and activities run on the 3rd Saturday of each month 12:30pm – 3:30pm.

Beyond the Magic – UBC Chemistry Event

Did someone say liquid-nitrogen ice cream?!?! Beyond the Magic is held during National Chemistry Week each year. This year, members of the community, of all ages and backgrounds, are invited to come visit and celebrate everyday-chemistry with UBC Chemistry on Saturday, October 25th from 12pm – 5pm.

Beyond the Magic gives chemists a chance to share the science they are most passionate about with people of all ages. With demonstrations shows, hands-on activities, prizes, and of course liquid nitrogen ice-cream, this is a day not to be missed! The event runs in the UBC Department of Chemistry, and is free – just RSVP through their Eventbrite.

Science World

I know that Science World seems like an obvious choice for this list, but I added it because they added The Ken Spencer Science Park! It’s the new outdoor area, where you can “re-imagine your role in creating a healthier community and world.”

During the year, visitors are encouraged to plant a seed in the community garden, meet one of the chickens wandering outside of the coop, and lift a house off the ground. The exhibits are very interactive, and the feel (and look) is very new. People are engaged in sustainability choices around transportation, energy, water, food, waste and housing. Hot tip: It’s also an awesome place to Instagram a picture amidst those red balls we are all seeing pop-up in our Vancouver feeds ;-)
