As the story goes, when local landscape architecture firm PWL Partnership designed Habitat Island in our Olympic Village they originally intended for it to truly be an island - at least part of the time. The idea was for the pathway to it to sit near the high tide line so that when the tide came up it would go under water, but as might be expected they never got through the red tape to make that happen. The city was concerned that people would get stranded on the island and they weren't prepared to take that risk, as cool as the concept might be. So they opted for those large rocks that make up the path you cross to get onto the island now, at most any tide. Today, however (and for the next couple of days), we're seeing a king tide and it is truly an island for the time being! Enjoy you temporary island, Vancouver!
