Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to design.

It happened quite naturally, initially I made about 7 pieces in bronze just for myself. I was working in a coffee shop and constantly had people commenting and inquiring to purchase, and then picked up the odd custom project. I started getting contacted by stores and then realized that it could be something i could do. It was always something on the side, until I decided to quit the day job and focus on the jewelry full time about a year ago.

What's your design philosophy?

I aim to make unique pieces that are timeless and driven by quality and craftsmanship, that people will hold onto for a long time.

Could you describe your process?

I usually start with a rough sketch, I then hand carve each piece out of wax or other organic materials, quite often the initial idea will transform through the sculpting process.

Which materials do you use? What method/technology do you use to make your jewellery?

I primarily use the lost wax casting process. I love creating textures and shapes which are impossible to fabricate from sheet metal.

What is your most cherished tool?

My exacto blade, my graver and my custom wax tool my studio buddy Ali Munn hand forged for me are my favorite everyday tools.

Which of your designs or projects are you most excited about right now and why?

I am working on some great custom engagement and wedding rings at the moment. I love the custom projects, each one is different and I get to work with a great variety of materials. Always very honored when someone choose me to create a piece which they intend to wear everyday

Where can we find your work?

Most of my collection is available through my online store shop.alexandradodds.com. I sell a selection of fine jewelry locally at Cavalier in Gastown, and my Chinatown studio is always open by appointment (just email me!) I also have multiple international retailers in the USA and New Zealand.

Are there any makers/designers you like and recommend?

Ali Munn- a very talented local metalsmith, my studio and noodle eating buddy. (Instagram @alimunn)
