Summer may have been the time to hit the road, but with the sun seemingly here to stay for a little while longer, travel enthusiasts can still plan that last amazing road trip before we head into the cooler seasons.

Summer may have been the time to hit the road, but with the sun seemingly here to stay for a little while longer, travel enthusiasts can still plan that last amazing road trip before we head into the cooler seasons. Instead of making the trek out across BC's mainland, head towards the water. Opting for an island trip is the perfect way to welcome the fall season to Vancouver.

Any avid traveler knows that expenses are a major part of any trip that requires plenty of planning—especially since some of these very expenses can help fund your next trip by way of rewards points. If flying isn't your thing and you'd rather work your way towards something a bit more tangible, Scotiabank's new suite of GM Visa cards is the perfect option for you. Scotiabank GM Visa card holders can earn up to 5% in GM earnings on their everyday purchases, which will go towards covering the purchase price or lease down payment of a new vehicle falling within the GM family (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac). Wouldn't it be great to know that you're traveling your way towards a new car?

With great spending rewards programs and just enough time to fit in one last island road trip before fall officially descends upon us, we're here to provide you with the insider's guide to must-visit destinations, must-see sights and things to do while you make your way around Vancouver Island.

1. Victoria

The Must-Do

As our capital city, Victoria houses BC's majestic parliament buildings, the Empress Hotel and the Royal BC Museum—all of which are must-see sights for fans of architecture and history buffs alike. All nestled along the Inner Harbour, you'll be one with the tourists, but with such a beautiful surrounding, we're sure you won't mind.

The Must-Eat

One of the most famous restaurants in Victoria is definitely known for all the right reasons. Il Terrazzo Ristorante's rustic decor contributes to its intimate atmosphere, making it ideal for diners looking for great ambiance and great food.

The Must-See

Unbeknownst to many, Victoria is actually home to North America's second oldest Chinatown. Visitors are encouraged to check out the historical landmark that is Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street and peruse all the surrounding shops and restaurants.

2. The Gulf Islands

The Must-Do

Salt Spring Island is the most populous and well-known of the Gulf Islands, making it the number one destination among the bunch. Not only is the island home to a diverse mix of cultures, many notable creatives also choose to call Salt Spring Island home meaning there are lots of studios and shops to check out.

The Must-Eat

Have you ever dined in a bus? Well now you can at Wild Thyme Coffee House, located on Saturna Island. This cafe is built in and around a well preserved and converted antique double decker bus. While Saturna may be the least developed and most sparsely populated of the Gulf Islands, the natural beauty and characteristic sandstone formations make it an ideal location to spend a weekend.

The Must-See

For travelers that are looking for a little bit more character, Mayne Island is the place to visit. Full of turn of the century structures, there will be plenty of buildings to admire and take in during a pit stop at this Gulf Island. Architecture aside, Mayne Island is also known for its great kayaking and historic lighthouse at Georgina Point.

With over 20 km of biking and hiking trails in place, beaches and plenty of opportunities to observe the local wildlife, this is a must-visit spot just off Nanaimo's coast.

The Must-Eat

Greek food may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this island city, but this cuisine just happens to be what the locals are raving about at Asteras Greek Taverna. Generous portions, delicious food and an impressive wine selection aside, the place is also known for its hospitality and homey decor.

The Must-See

Other than Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park, the Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is also deserving of a visit. Aside from extensive hiking trails, the primary feature of the park are two gorgeous, photo-worthy waterfalls.
